Guest Post: [life of love] + 500 Follower Giveaway Day #3

8.13.2011

I'm excited to have Sarah from [life of love] guest posting for y'all today while I settle into my new apartment!  She has some great advice for y'all & don't forget that day 3 of my 500 follower giveaway will be at the end of the post!  Enjoy!

Hi! I'm Sarah, but my friends call me Sar (rhymes with bear). I blog over at [life of love] about, well, my life that's full of love! I'm a Texas transplant who is originally from northwestern Washington, so culture shock still occurs (even after 3 years!). I believe in hugging thoroughly, dancing constantly, and laughing with no regard.

To celebrate my 25th birthday, I came up with 25 life lessons I’ve learned throughout my 25 years on earth. Although I've seen other blog posts like this, I wanted to list out what was important to me.
So far, this is what I've learned:

1. Learn people’s names. If I could rank in order my life lessons learned, I think this would be the most important. Whether it is the housekeeper who cleans your work building, the mailman you see every afternoon, or the woman you meet at the party who is your best friend’s brother’s niece, learning someone’s name is the key to building strong and meaningful connections.
2. You will never be good at everything. Embracing your idiosyncrasies or faults will make you happier over the long run. I cannot sing well, I have a softball player’s thighs, and I will never, ever be able to fold a fitted sheet. I still sing out loud in the car where nobody can hear, I love how my legs look in running shorts, and nobody sees the fitted sheets when the bed is made. And I’m okay with those.
3. Speaking in I-statements is the best way to solve any argument. “I feel this way” is one argument that your friend/mother/significant other cannot disagree with, as they are your personal feelings. Being open and honest with your feelings will divulge your heart and make your relationship closer.
4. Life isn’t fair, but nobody promised it would be. Good people die, bad people live, and how you cope is ultimately up to you.
5. Choose your battles. It will only make you more frustrated if you fight over small things, but if something is important to you, be prepared to make a stance.
6. Always choose love. Love conquers all.
7. As Charles Swindoll once wrote, “I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.” You cannot always control what life throws (or doesn’t throw) your way, but you are always in charge of your reaction.
8. Forgive others. Whether you are holding a grudge from 7th grade,or you are hurt from someone last year, forgiveness is the key to your personal happiness. Holding grudges will only make your heart heavy.
9. It is perfectly acceptable to be angry with God. He is prepared for your anger (and certainly can handle it), but He will help you overcome your hardships.
10. Just breathe. And if that doesn’t work, by all means, just dance.
11. If at any reason you feel like life is weighing you down, or you cannot handle it, visit those who have it worse off. I guarantee that being immersed in an environment where others are going through worse struggles but with a more positive attitude will almost immediately change your outlook.
12. You will always have someone who dislikes you; no matter how hard you try. Wasting your energy caring what others think about you is silly, tiring, and pointless.
13. Smile at people you meet or pass. You are more personable, and you never know whose day you are going to make.
14. All people deserve a second chance. A third chance is pushing it.
15. Sometimes you have to obey rules you don’t want to follow, but if you don’t try to help change them, you’re just complaining.
16. All good relationships are hard work. Even people who are meant to be have to be willing to compromise and learn each other’s needs.
17. Although stepping outside your comfort zone is scary, the payoff is exponentially great. Feeling as if you’re stuck in a job? Apply everywhere, even not in the town you live in, and move. Afraid of heights? Go bungee jumping. Conquering your fears will make you feel invincible.
18. Enjoy the little things, and recognize how much you love them. The feel of your mother’s hands. Skipping in parking lots with your dad. The way you and your brother can accurately quote the entire movie “Aladdin.”
19. Laughing at yourself is the only way you can be comfortable with who you are. It will also make you un-embarrass-able.
20. Asking for help does not make you weak, it makes you smart enough to realize that you can’t accomplish your task alone. Stubbornness only delays your success.
21. Never regret your life experiences. If you did something you are not proud of, make sure you don’t do it again. Everything you have done previously makes you who you are today.
22. If it is something you have never done, you should not judge someone who has—regardless of the choice. You are allowed to have opinions, but your judgments are better held to your own actions.
23. A random act of small kindness goes a long way. Pay for the person’s drink behind you in the coffee line. Bring your coworker lunch. Hide your office worker’s favorite candy in her desk drawer with a note.
24. If you want to be somebody else, change your perspective.
25. If you’re still having a bad day and all of the above is not working, then wear frilly underwear. It is not possible to have a bad day when you’re wearing cute underwear.

Thanks again to Sar for guest posting today.  Her tips are simply fabulous & I hope you got something out of them!

500 Follower Giveaway Day #1

8.11.2011

Today my lovely blog friends marks the first day in four days of giveaways to celebrate Sweet Tea Serendipity's 500 followers!  Today's giveaway was generously donated by Paula at Real Housewife of Singapore.  She has a great post for y'all & a chance to win some goodies at the end!

Howdy! I am Paula the Real Housewife of Singapore. I am thrilled to be guest posting today!

house·wife
noun /ˈhousˌwīf/
housewives, plural
"A married woman whose main occupation is caring for her family, managing household affairs, and doing housework. "

That's me! I am married, I stay home to raise children, cook, clean, and the like. Once upon a time this was all that was required, AND expected of a woman. The man went out and worked, while the little woman stayed home. It all seemed happy on the surface according to shows like Father Knows Best. However, my house is a bit more...King of Queens -ish...

Below are the rules on how to be the perfect housewife, according to an article published in 1955.

1. Have dinner ready: Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal on time.

This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him, and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed.

2. Prepare yourself: Take 15 minutes to rest so you will be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking. He has just been with a lot of work- weary people. Be a little gay and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift.

3. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives, gathering up school books, toys, paper, etc. Then run a dust cloth over the tables. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift, too.

4. Prepare the children: Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces if they are small, comb their hair, and if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.

5. Minimize the noise: At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of washer, dryer, dishwasher or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet. Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him.

6. Things to avoid: Don't greet him with problems or complaints. Don't complain if he's late for dinner. Count this as minor compared with what he might have gone through that day.

7. Make him comfortable: Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest he lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soft, soothing and pleasant voice. Allow him to relax and unwind.

8. Listen to him: You may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first.

9. Make the evening his: Never complain if he does not take you out to dinner or to other places of entertainment; instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure, his need to be home and relax.

10. The goal: Try to make your home a place of peace and order where your husband can relax.

I am not against wanting a happy clean house, and a happy (and clean?) husband...but I laugh as read those. Not because they are out of line or make the women submissive, but because they make the men sound weak, and incapable, and fragile! Apparently the men back then couldn't handle a hair outta place, or an under fluffed pillow without freaking out.

I get this image in my head of Jimmy Stewart (It's a Wonderful Life) stuttering, and stumbling around as he runs his hands through his hair in distress, while he walks around the house and sees dirty dishes, noisy kids, and his wife without lipstick!

I would love to be, but I am not nearly as organized as the housewives of yesteryear with all the dinner planning, and housekeeping... and making sure the children are picture perfect darlings for my dearly beloved...and I almost never wear a ribbon in my hair. As for dinner, I make sure to keep the groceries stocked, and a list of food delivery numbers handy!

Now whether or not you want to act like a 1950's housewife is up to you, I just want to help you look like one! So...I am going to give one lucky reader a fantastic "old fashioned" apron from After Thoughts by Jennee Thompson.

Wouldn't you just be the cutest little housewife on the block, or in your condo, or cul de sac.... um... where ever it is you call home. The polka dots scream 50's, the ruffles are oh so feminine, and it would look oh so cute paired with some black kitten heels, or "HOLY HOTNESS BATMAN" with fishnets and stilettos (hey its your kitchen!) - "to the bedroom Robin!"

Beach Recap/Guest Posting at My SoCal Life

8.08.2011

Here's a few pictures from our beach vacation!

P.S. I'm guest posting today over at My SoCal Life, be sure & check out my fun summer project I'm sharing!

Guest Post: Sunlight After Rain

8.06.2011

Today is the last guest post of my vacation.  Please give a warm welcome to Sarah from Sunlight After Rain & her fashionable post!

When Delaney told me she had never heard of Polyvore, I was shocked!
(but excited at the same time to show her how awesome Polyvore is!)
Polyvore is a design website where you can take clothing from almost any website imaginable and combine it together to make your perfect set of clothing.
And price, my friends, is not an object.
Nothing is better than combining a $4 tank from Forever 21 with a $500 bag from Marc Jacobs :)

In the past few months, Polyvore has kind of become my life.
I cannot tell you how many times I have used it to plan out my outfits or figure out what I am going to need as I go shopping that day.
And this summer, I'm kind of all about the blues.
So, I made a set to represent that!

I have so many different versions of this outfit it's ridiculous.
But, it's perfect for summer, no?
Comfortable enough that you can run around and do anything in it, but still cute enough that you don't have to worry about how you look doing what ever it is that you are doing these days!

What do you think?
I'd love to hear what some of your favorite Polyvore creations are!

Thanks again to Sarah for educating me about the ways of Polyvore.  I know I can't wait to get started.  Oh & don't forget that I have a few tricks [[or giveaways]] up my sleeve for next week!

Guest Post: In the Pink & Green

8.04.2011

Today is the 3rd guest post for my vacation week.  Enjoy the sweet treat Jane has cooked up for y'all!

Happy weekend to all you fabulous Sweet Tea readers! My name is Jane and I'm thrilled be to guest posting here while the lovely Delaney is on vaca. I write a blog called In the Pink and Green. It basically chronicles my travels and adventures with my hubby and our puppy as we move around the country, as well as my attempts to try and balance my desire to be healthy, fit, and eco-friendly with my need to shop, collect beauty products (Sephora is my weakness), follow celebrity gossip and consume sugar like it's a food group.

Oh yeah, that's my puppy Lola...she's pretty much the greatest thing ever :)
Speaking of which, my guest post today just happens to be about dessert! (What a coincidence...) More specifically, both of today's treats have a common ingredient that is pretty much one of the best things ever invented: Nutella. Now if you've never had Nutella, stop reading this post, go to the store, and buy some. Eat it. Thank me for changing your life. Seriously though, Nutella is just so creamy and delicious, but what I really love about it is that it's so versatile. It pairs perfectly with salty pretzels, it's divine on crepes, heck it can even make your morning toast taste like something truly special. Basically Nutella is like peanut butter's much cooler European cousin, the one that wears leather jackets and red lipstick and looks fabulous all the time.

So now that we're all on the same page about Nutella's awesomeness it's time to get cooking! This past week, my husband and I were both out of town, so I asked our neighbors to water our plants. I wanted to bake them a little something to show my appreciation, and I thought that this Nutella Swirl Pound Cake seemed like the perfect thing. (Ok, I just really wanted to make this pound cake and didn't want to eat the entire thing myself and I needed a reason to give some away...) I found this recipe on live love pasta, which I found via foodgawker. I adore pound cake, and the thought of it swirled with Nutella sounded like the perfect combination.

Butter and sugar getting ready to be creamed together...definitely want to make sure you beat well so the mixture becomes light and fluffy!
My eggs were not at room temperature which is key for a good pound cake, so a quick solution is just sitting the eggs in a bowl of hot (not boiling) water for a few minutes.
It honestly took all my self control not to eat all this batter by itself...so delicious.
Layering the batter with the Nutella...also at the end when you swirl the layers, don't worry if it gets a little messed up because I was worried mine was going to look weird...just smooth over the top and bake!
Finished product! (It's a smidgen darker then I'd like, but oh well!)
Since the post over at live love pasta has really excellent step by step photos, I've only included a few photos from my attempt to make this recipe because it really is extremely straightforward. Overall, I thought it turned out really well, and it tasted just as delicious as I had hoped. I don't typically make up my own recipes on my blog, I usually just try out other recipes and then review them to let people know whether they're actually worth the effort or not, and I have to say this pound cake definitely is!

Yum.
My only issue with it was that I'm still learning how to adjust my recipes to accommodate for the high altitude out in Colorado. Everything I read always says to increase the oven temperature, however, because I did this my pound cake got just a tad burnt on top. But it still tasted delicious, and other than that I had no problems with the recipe. It would be a perfect dessert or even breakfast, and I'll definitely be making it again.

On to my next Nutella recipe...this one is so easy peasy but tastes amazing, so I'm really excited to share it with all of you. Nutella Ice Cream. I know right, sounds delicious doesn't it? I decided to make this recipe to surprise my husband since he had been out of town for a business trip, and well, he loves both Nutella and ice cream! I also realized that this is the first time I've made ice cream all summer and it's almost August (eek I need to get on the ice cream making stat!), and I'm SO glad I gave this recipe a try. What I love about it is that it only has two ingredients. That's right, just two. When I saw the recipe on Galley Gourmet, I was definitely a little skeptical, but also intrigued. You basically just take one container of Nutella and one can of evaporated milk (I used 2%), blend them together, refrigerate, and then pour into your ice cream maker. I blended mine for about a half hour before sticking it in the freezer to harden, and let me tell you, the flavor and consistency were amazing! Something about it reminds me of a Wendy's Frosty, so rich and thick and cool and chocolate-y!

I used a hand mixer to blend the evaporated milk and the Nutella, and then refrigerated it overnight...also, how cute is this heart shaped bowl?! I got a set of three heart bowls at Urban Outfitters of all places and they were only like $10 for the set! Gotta love good deals like that :)
I use the ice cream maker attachment with my Kitchen Aid stand mixer and it does a great job! You just keep the bowl in the freezer, and I love that it means one less appliance hogging space in my kitchen!
Consistency of mixture after approx. 30 mins in the ice cream maker...
(Soft) finished product ready to go in the freezer! :)
So whether you're in the mood to bake or to ice cream make, you can't go wrong with either one of these delicious Nutella treats. Thanks again to Delaney for having me over to Sweet Tea Serendipity, and I hope that y'all have a "sweet" weekend! xoxo

Thanks to Jane for such a sweet guest post!  Definitely go check out her blog & show her some sweet love.

Guest Post: Grits & Giggles

8.01.2011

Today we have our second guest poster of the week, Jenilyn from Girts & Giggles.  She's giving my readers a fabulous ruffled lampshade tutorial!  If you enjoy this tutorial, be sure to stop by her blog & give her some love!

Hey ya'll! I'm Jenilyn and I'm the author of Grits and Giggles, a Mommy and Crafty Blog. I would like to thank Delaney for having me over today to share with you a tutorial on how to make your very own Ruffled Lampshade!

I had a hideous lampshade that I've had since I was in college and it needed a serious facelift. I wanted it to be fun and flirty so ruffles was the answer! Let's get started!

Materials:
Lampshade
1/4-1/2 yard of fabric for your ruffles (depending on lampshade size)
hot glue gun
sewing machine to make ruffles
Start with your ugly lampshade
Take your fabric and cut it into 1.5" strips across the length of the fabric. You can make your ruffles bigger if you would like.
Destroy your lampshade! I left the underside of mine because it was neutral, but make sure you don't have a dark or bright color showing through your ruffles.
Take a few of your strips of fabric, and cover any dark spots or metal. I didn't want to see the metal through mine, so I covered them up. Place one or two strips to the side...you'll need those at the end. Don't ruffle them!
Use hot glue to cover the metal.
Now we have a nice canvas to work with.
Ruffle your fabric strips. If you've never ruffled fabric, you can use This tutorial. The tutorial is for streamers, but the concept is the same. I sewed my ruffles 1/4" from the top of the fabric strip.
Using your glue gun, begin attaching the ruffles from the Bottom of the lampshade.
When you get back to where you started, angle your ruffle up and start a new row. There's no need to cut your strip and start a new row unless you just really want to.
Keep wrapping around, gluing every few inches. Make sure you're covering the stitches on the row below the one you're gluing.
Keep going until you reach the top.
Fold one of the strips you set aside in half. Place the folded edge over the top row of stitches on the top ruffle and glue it down around the lampshade. Fold it over and glue it down on the inside, finishing your shade.
Throw it on your lamp, turn it on, and admire!!
I hope you enjoy redoing your own lampshade!! It feels great to get a whole new look for little to no money!! Thanks again to Delaney for having me over. Ya'll have a great day!

Keep coming back all this week for more exciting guest posts!  You never know what I'll come up with next.
